Vafi Atalay 1979 yılında Gazze’de doğmuştur.Özel yetenekli öğrencilerin okuduğu Filistin Lisesi’ni derece ile bitirerek devlet bursu ve yurt dışı eğitim hakkı kazanmıştır.Atalay, Avrupa ülkeleri dâhil burs kazandığı ülkeler arasından yükseköğrenim görmek için Türkiye’yi seçmiş ve 1998 yılında Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi’ne kayıt olmuştur. 2004 yılında lisans eğitimini tamamlamış ve aynı yıl Marmara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Genel Cerrahi Anabilim Dalı’nda asistanlığa başlamıştır.2009 yılında ihtisas eğitimini tamamlayan Vafi Atalay, 2010-2011 yılları arasında Gazze Şuhada Al Aksa Hastanesi’nde Cerrahi Klinik Şefi olarak görev yapmıştır.2011’de hocalarının daveti ile ülkemizin en saygın tıp fakültelerinden biri olan Marmara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi’nde akademik hayata başlamıştır.2016’da doçent, 2021’de profesörlük unvanını kazanmıştır.Ayrıca İstanbul Teknopark çatısı altında da çalışmalar yapmaktadır. Evli ve üç çocuk sahibi olan Vafi Atalay, anadili olan Arapça’nın yanında çok iyi derecede Türkçe ve İngilizce bilmektedir.

Vafi Atalay’ın yurt içi ve yurt dışında birçok saygın mesleki örgüte ve yayın kurullarına üyeliği bulunmaktadır.Çalışmaları akademik alanda, mesleki örgütler nezdinde ve sivil toplum kuruluşları tarafından çeşitli ödüllerle taltif edilmiştir.Ulusal ve uluslararası saygın dergilerde yayımlanmış 50’den fazla makalesi bulunmaktadır.Ayrıca birçok dergide hakemlik ve editör kurul üyeliği görevleri bulunmaktadır.
